The Workplace Disability Network of the Black Hills (WDNBH), formerly known as the Workforce Diversity Network (WDN), was founded in response to a statewide effort to expand employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

In 2013, South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard launched the Employment Works Initiative. Inspired by the National Governors Association’s report A Better Bottom Line: Employing People with Disabilities, this initiative highlighted both the economic and social benefits of inclusive hiring. Governor Daugaard brought a personal understanding to this work, having grown up with parents who were deaf.

As part of this effort, the South Dakota Employment Works Task Force was formed, bringing together business leaders, educators, nonprofit organizations, vocational rehabilitation professionals, and individuals with disabilities. The group focused on five key areas:

  • Engaging businesses

  • Strengthening connections between employers and job seekers

  • Addressing barriers to employment

  • Promoting flexible and responsive workplace practices

  • Expanding education and awareness

From this collaborative, statewide momentum, a regional network began to take shape. In 2014, that vision became a reality with the founding of WDN—now known as the Workplace Disability Network of the Black Hills.
