Bridging the Gap:
Autism, Skills, and Employment

April 22, 2026
9:00 AM MT / 10:00 AM CT

Brittany Schmidt will join Vicki and Heidi for the April session to explore the significant gap between the skills of individuals with autism and their employment outcomes, highlighting systemic barriers in hiring, onboarding, and workplace culture. Despite strong qualifications and valuable abilities, autistic adults experience some of the highest rates of unemployment and underemployment, with many working in roles below their skill level.

Participants will examine challenges faced by both early-career individuals and those with college degrees, emphasizing that these disparities are not due to a lack of ability, but rather structural and communication barriers within traditional workplace practices.

The session also highlights the strengths autistic employees bring to the workplace—including attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong problem-solving skills—and provides practical strategies for employers to create more effective, inclusive hiring and retention practices.
